Where are they now...what are they doing?

Lisa Blink - VSC Member 2007-2008

"As a member of VSC 2007-2008, I served as a reading teacher at Loyola Academy of St. Louis.  Now 6 months later, my teaching career has begun at the K-8 parochial school I once attended in my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa.  Looking back on my year of service, there is one thing I miss above all: the community we had.  I still consider the women I lived with to be some of my greatest friends because they taught me so much.  We still keep in touch often.
Working with the young men I taught has since served as an inspiration to me.  It reminds me that I can do anything with God's help.  Volunteering now sheds new light on this famous phrase, "To the world you might be one person, but to one person you just might be the world."   Today I am using my gifts and fulfilling a dream by sponsoring a child overseas through Compassion International.  Just maybe one more Nicaraguan child can have what he needs.  He is no longer a statistic; he is my brother in Christ."

Emilie Grimi (Naiser) - VSC Member 2004-2005

"I finished my year of service in VSC in the summer of 2005.  I enjoyed volunteering at Marian Middle School so much that in the fall I was hired to teach there full time.  Now I am married and I continue working as a math teacher in the St. Louis area.  My husband and I joined the Young Adult St. Vincent de Paul Society together to stay close to the Vincentian spirit through service."

Meg Kymes - VSC Member 2006-2007

"I'm Meg Kymes.  I was a VSC in 2006-2007.  Currently I'm working at my VSC service site, the St. Vincent de Paul Society.  I work in their Criminal Justice Ministry as a Direct Services Assistant.  I work with men and women coming out of prison and jail.  I help with basic needs such as clothing, hygiene items, food and bus tickets as well as utility assistance and rental assistance.  I'm also in formation with the Daughters of Charity St. Louis Province.  I live with four wonderful Daughters of Charity.
I firmly believe that VSC changed my life.  Not only did I find some of my still closest friends there, but I found my calling of working with the poor as well as my vocation during my year of service.  It's so true what our motto says, 'A Year of Service Makes a Lifetime of Difference'."

Rebecca Balhoff - VSC Member 2007-2008

"I am living in Baltimore and getting my masters in International Nutrition at John Hopkins and preparing to become a Registered Dietician.  My experience with VSC has definitely influenced the person I am today and the type of activities I am involved in.  I am volunteering at Movable Feast, an organization that provides meals to homebound individuals dealing with AIDS, cancer and other illnesses.  I am also taking an amazing class called Health and Homelessness, and planning a few workshops for the local women's shelter, including health and nutrition, relaxation techniques, and possibly and exercise class (keep your fingers crossed!).  I also help out at my church once a month to prepare meals to deliver to a few hundred homeless individuals in the area (and I thought cooking for 8 was a challenge!).  I feel so blessed to be able to use all the amazing experiences I gained at Our Lady's Inn and apply it to the work I am doing today."

As our motto says, A Year of Service Makes a Lifetime of Difference.  This means that our mission does not end at the closing of your service year, but the spirit of community and service to the poor continues.  Many of our volunteers continue to be active in the VSC program even after their own year ends.

Want to get involved??  Here’s what you can do…

  • SPREAD THE WORDDo you know someone about to graduate from college or who has recently graduated?  Do you know someone who is discerning a volunteer program like the VSC?  Let us know about them, and them about us!!
  • ATTEND A VOLUNTEER FAIR – As we are not able to make it to every school in the country, we are always looking for former VSCs to share their experience of service with college students.  Direct contact through the universities is our most important means of reaching college students, so let us know if you are able to help!
  • DONATE – Financial gifts help to support current and future volunteers in their mission of service to the poor and to God.  In doing so, any donation directly impacts the poor and marginalized here in St. Louis and fosters a spirit of charity among youth today.
  • PRAY!! – Remember to keep all current and past VSCs as well as those discerning God’s call to serve in your daily intentions.  Also, continue to pray for the Vincentian mission and especially the poor whom we serve.
