“I really appreciate the experience...the people I've met, the realationships...the overall growth in awareness about the poor and marginalized...and especially about the ministries my fellow volunteer serve with."
"I've learned that serving the poor is not like a superhero coming in to save the day. It takes patience and you might not see the fruits of your labor right away...I've also learned to have compassion...not to judge people so quickly - everyone's story is different and some have gone through things I can't even imagine. I've learned how much difference it makes when you treat the homeless with tons of respect and talk with them like you would with friends." Carrie '07-'08 |

"My work has daily reminded me that I am directly serving God's people. My students have shown me what the real world is really like. They have challenged me to redefine what I stand for and have reminded me of the true purpose of education.

"The things we do in our ministries on a daily basis are not that extraordinary, but the impact a service volunteer can have in the lives of the people she or he serves (and in their own lives) is nothing short of divine." Joel '06-'07 |
“If I believe that Christ wants me to love my neighbor as myself, then I need to actually do that. I need to respect and care for my neighbor just as much as I respect and care for myself...the poor tend to be the ones society overlooks; they are my neighbors...serving the poor is something I see as necessary for me to do." Claire '07-'08
"My site supervisor is amazing. I can't explain how supportive he's been...he is always ready and willing to answer my questions and encourage me. I am deeply blessed to know him! The 'thank-yous' I receive from my clients are more rewarding than anything else I can imagine." Emily '07-'08
"I have always loved doing service...I fell in love with it high school and was involved in service during college. For me, the opportunity was too good to pass up. As I looked into VSC, not only was I impressed with the agencies but I was excited about community, simple living and prayer. I have been forced to stretch, grow and be more flexible than I knew I could be. The women I serve are so full of hope..."
Rebecca '07-'08
"St. Vincent was right when he said that the poor would bless you! Their strength and faith amidst their hardships is to be admired and followed. VSC has let me have experiences that I never thought I would be brave enought to step up and do on my own...I've gone into jails...I've help ex-offenders re-enter society."
Teresa '07-'08
"While a path of teaching may not be as financially rewarding as a job in statistics, it feeds my soul. I believe I am truly called to be in a classroom guiding our future and preparing them to overcome obstacles...now I know I am truly a teacher."
Tina '07-'08
I decided to not just think about a year of service but to do it. I learned there are many types of poverty. I was forced to think outside of the box in relating to people so different from myself. I am sure that long after I leave here, I will still be doing some type of service.
