You can read what these and some of our past volunteers have to say about Vincentian Service Corps and their year of service below.

Janean

"I'm not entirely sure why I'm doing a year of service. It just felt...right. I've been blessed in my life to have enough and with gifts to share. I believe it's my responsibility to do what I can for others. For me, that apparently translated, somehow, into a year of service."

Janean 2009-2010

Deanna

"What attracted me to VSC was their spirit of welcome. At every point of the application process, I felt like I was already a member. Also, the Spirit of Service and the chance to live in community appealed to me. I wouldn't have joined if I didn't think that I would learn about myself at the same time that I would be learning about others (both professionally and socially)."

Deanna 2009-2010

Maggie

"I have always wanted to serve and VSC felt like the only easy choice. The Director made such an effort to support me in any decision I made. She was happy with anything I decided to do. I hope to be a good example of Christian love to the children I am working with. I also hope to grow closer to God through my community."

Maggie 2009-2010

Beth

"I'm doing a year of service because this is where God called me. I've been struggling with both understanding what sort of non-profit job He is calling me to and His commandment to "sell all you own, give it to the poor and follow me." A year of service seemed a good way to become acquainted with social justice work and a less extreme way of obeying that command."

Beth 2009-2010

Mary

"I have always wanted to commit a period of my life to serving God...I am excited to serve adults. My previous experiences in the human development field have been with toddlers, children and adolescents. I have always had a soft spot for the elderly and never had an opportunity to care for and serve them. I look forward to meeting some wonderful people and sharing some stories and memories."

Mary 2009-2010

Aisa

"I have many hope and expectations for my year of service: friends, unending love as demonstrated by Mother Teresa, growth in my relationship with God and myself, adventure, spontaneity, trust and honesty, understanding and empathy, strength, vulnerability...the list goes on! I feel God called and I answered."

Aisa 2009-2010

Caryn

"I like how the Vincentian Service Corps strives to work with and help poor and vulnerable populations. Often the needy are overlooked or ignored, but serving with VSC, I've been able to be present in the lives of some of these people as we both make a difference in each other's lives as we help and learn from each other."

Caryn 2008-2009

Elena

"While attending St. John's University in Queens, New York, I fell in love with the Vincentian Mission of service to the poor...I hope this year will allow me to grow in my relationship with God through living Sr. Vincent's mission."

Elena 2008-2009

Emma

"I chose to do a volunteer year out of a desire to give back. I expect to serve God by serving others in need and to allow Him to use me to fulfill His will on earth. I have been abundantly, extravagantly and undeservedly blessed in my life and I want to use my time with VSC to give of myself to those who have not been given the same opportunities."

Emma 2008-2009

Jessica"Why do a year of service? Well, why not? I was just about to graduate from college and suddenly realized that I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do next. So I began praying about what God wanted me to do. That was when I found a brochure for the Vincentian Service Corps and as soon as I read it, I knew that this was where I was suppose to be...For the first time in my life, I feel like I am in exactly the right place at exactly the right time. I feel like I have really made a connection with the teens I serve and hope I will be able to be a positive influence in their lives; I know they have had an amazing impact on me already."

Kelly

"I wanted to do a year of service in order to experience and appreciate a different point of view and culture. I also wanted to develop my skills in criminal justice and to discover ways I can serve the poor with my personal skills and talents. I was attracted to VSC because I would be living in community with other volunteers who share similar values and because I would be able to serve the poor through the St. Vincent de Paul Criminal Justice Ministry."

Kelly 2008-2009

Kristina"As I was finishing up at Notre Dame, I really  had no idea what I wanted to do after  graduation. I had lots of options but not until I started thinking about giving a year to God in direct service to the poor did I really become excited. I started researching various programs and found the size and service opportunities of VSC most appealing. I'm serving at Our Lady's Inn, which is a shelter for homeless, pregnant women and their  children...I've already had the chance to accompany a woman to the hospital and stay with her through her labor."

Kristina 2008-2009

Molly"I felt particularly drawn to the call of helping the poor. I was really attracted to VSC because it is really all about loving and serving others fully. I work with adorable one year old children at Guardian Angels De Sales Child Care. I get so much out of working with these little ones and have learned so much from all of my co-workers already. There is such a beautiful sense of self-giving and love...I love being a part of the mission of helping others because they are all the images of Christ."

Molly 2008-2009

Sarah"When I graduated from the College of William and Mary, I wasn't sure what type of graduate studies to pursue. A priest suggested that I "do something radical for God" and I thought that was a great idea. To me, this year is a period of time to dedicate especially to God. The VSC isn't just a large, impersonal organization. I also love the emphasis on community living and spiritual growth. My hope for our VSC community is that we become tighter-knit and are able to support each other on our faith journeys."

Sarah 2008-2009

Claire“If I believe that Christ wants me to love my neighbor as myself, then I need to actually do that. I need to respect and care for my neighbor just as much as I respect and care for myself...the poor tend to be the ones society overlooks; they are my neighbors...serving the poor is something I see as necessary for me to do."

Claire 2007-2008

Rebecca"I have always loved doing service...I fell in love with it high school and was involved in service during college. For me, the opportunity was too good to pass up. As I looked into VSC, not only was I impressed with the agencies but I was excited about community, simple living and prayer. I have been forced to stretch, grow and be more flexible than I knew I could be. The women I serve are so full of hope..."

Rebecca 2007-2008

Teresa"St. Vincent was right when he said that the poor would bless you! Their strength and faith amidst their hardships is to be admired and followed. VSC has let me have experiences that I never thought I would be brave enough to step up and do on my own...I've gone into jails...I've help ex-offenders re-enter society."

Teresa 2007-2008

Joel

"The things we do in our ministries on a daily basis are not that extraordinary, but the impact a service volunteer can have in the lives of the people she or he serves (and in their own lives) is nothing short of divine."

Joel 2006-2007

Andrew"I decided to not just think about a year of service but to do it. I learned there are many types of poverty. I was forced to think outside of the box in relating to people so different from myself. I am sure that long after I leave here, I will still be doing some type of service."

Andrew 2005-2006
